If you boil down the goal of all my work, it's to create more understanding among diverse groups of people, and build more
empathy around diversity.
~ Phil Borges
20 years ago, Phil Borges was a middle-aged orthodontist with a lucrative practice, looking for passion in his life. A rediscovery of his love of photography led him to sell his practice and, at age 45, start over in pursuit of a photography career.
His path of transformation has taken him from wondering if he would
ever make it in the early years, to a successful commercial photography
practice, to popularity in galleries, to collaboration with
organizations like Amnesty International and CARE on award-winning books and
exhibitions about causes he cares deeply about.
Along the way, he founded Bridges to Understanding, a non-profit that "engages students worldwide in direct, interactive learning and storytelling to build cross-cultural understanding." He has also hosted three documentaries for the Discovery Channel and National Geographic focused on indigenous cultures that still maintain a spiritual dialogue with the natural world.
